Imagine a buzzing classroom filled with eager and excited students. The subject is writing; the writers are third graders who realize their writing potential. All are in varying stages of project completion. Some are collaborating; others are editing; still others are beginning a new piece. Welcome to my hope and dream of writing success for my twenty-five students. My school is a borderline Title I school. At one time it received funds, but most recently it has not. Without the help from generous donors, these students often go without the tools needed to encourage their successes.

The dilemma my class faces is the uncertain use of the shared LCD projector in writing instruction. In our 6-Traits + 1 writing instruction, I give my students a mini-lesson, followed by scoring practice. To showcase the piece to be scored, I need the projector to magnify the single copy my students bring in for examination. Unfortunately, our class shares the LCD projector with other classes, making it a frustrating situation. We will never be certain the projector is available. Without timely and consistent lessons, I fear this dream will remain just that--a dream.

My students would benefit from consistent lessons, made possible with the gift of a LCD projector. In this way, my lessons can be built one upon another. With scaffolded lessons my students’ writing abilities will blossom and grow.
