The Toymaker: Science of Sound

My students need a school visit for 100 students from The Toymaker to participate in a hands-on workshop on the science of sound.

  • $1,190 goal

Let's make some noise! Our group of 100 third-grade students are high-energy children who love learning about science, especially in a hands-on workshop. We are a school with a 50% free- and reduced-lunch population and 25% of our school is comprised of ELL students. We have a dedicated principal and staff and have had great success with our academic program.

This winter, we will dig in to our science unit on sound. While we do provide some hands-on activities as part of the learning, students need many and varied experiences to truly understand the concepts.

The Toymaker is a previous teacher who now conducts workshops for students based on our adopted science curriculum. He brings all of the materials for students to build a mysterious sound-generator that’s all about pitch, frequency, sound sources and sound receivers. He even ties the entire workshop together with a book and song. When the students finish creating their sound-generators, they sing and "play" along with him. Students love building and creating the sound-generators and are very motivated during his workshop. Having just learned about these sound concepts and terms, students cement their understanding of the topic through this kinetic exercise.

Your help will make it possible for our students to have this culminating hands-on experience where they will hammer, saw, tape, spin, pop, whir and more to create some noise with their learning.
