I team teach 75 6th graders history for 45min a day at a one grade level school. It resides in a rural town in the state of Mississippi. According to national standards our school library is not sufficient to meet the needs of our students. This is exasperated by the fact that Mississippi students have consistently scored below the national average in national norm referenced tests in the area of reading. My students have consistently scored in the proficient and basic level on Mississippi Curriculum Test which means they are well below the national level in the area of reading. Our school goal is to help close this reading gap. To meet this goal, I would like to create a classroom library where students explore the world around them through their reading. Since my district cannot afford to bring our school’s library up to the national standard, they most defiantly do not have the money to help me to develop a classroom library. Although the state of Mississippi does give us money to run our classroom it spent on the basic needs for my 80 students. To create a good classroom library, I will have to seek outside sources for funding. In teaching 6th grade history, we explore the countries of the Western Hemisphere. My goal is to start a classroom library which helps my students to explore the world they live in through the writers of the world. Our school’s library section on Latin American countries consists of nonfiction books about the country. These books are unable to convey how the people feel about their country, about there experiences as Latin Americans, nor connect my students to the people. Although Latin America is our neighbor to the south, my students know very little about the countries. Reading Around the World-Latin America is a program that will help my students experience Latin America through their dynamic authors. Latin authors explore a variety of themes like adventure, love, comedy, mysteries, and etc. These themes will help my students to understand the richness of the Latin American culture, customs, and struggles. To begin this library, I will need a variety of meaningful and interesting books from Latin American authors in my classroom. Goal- To create a classroom library from authors from around the world- Objectives- To improve students reading lexile scores; To have students to read 15 min a day during history class; To have students hold a reading circle discussion on a bi-weekly basis. I will deem this program a success if: 80% of students improve their reading lexile scores; 90% of students read 15 min a day during history class; 90% of students hold a reading circle discussion on a bi-weekly basis Do you remember the times when reading took you to another place, time, or event? In your mind, it was just you and the main character(s) trying to solve their dilemmas. In this process you were able to connect to a world beyond your surroundings. As the second child of a single mother of five, I struggled to learn how to read. It wasn’t until I was introduced to the adventures of Pippi Longstocking that I understood the necessity of reading. It allowed me to unlock my imagination. I was able to explore the cultures, customs, and struggles of character from around the world. My life has been enriched by the experiences that reading has afforded me. As a teacher, my desire is to broaden my students’ experiences through reading. This is why I created this program.
