Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher in an inner-city school. My district has experienced severe budget cuts and there are even some textbook shortages. Thank goodness for DonorsChoose! This year we are departmentalizing the subjects among the three of us teachers. Consequently, I teach the math which allows me 60 minutes each day with each class. I have collaborated with my math coach to create math stations and will start them as soon as we have the needed manipulatives which are the playing cards, overhead playing cards, and the Algebraic Learning System. Hence, my request to you.

My math situation is that I've created math stations to compliment my math curriculum. These math station topics are titled by the 5 National Conference of Teachers of Mathematics content standards: Number & Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Data & Probability, and Algebra. I am requesting playing cards, overhead playing cards, and a hands-on Algebra equation learning system to complete the manipulatives needed for the stations. These stations are powerful tools that allow my students to practice skills learned, and practice at their own pace. The students learn and practice strategies while interacting and having fun with each other! These stations also allow me to circulate, monitor, and redirect students when needed as well as differentiate the station content to each individual students' needs.

The playing cards I am requesting are used in many ways. They are used for a "Fraction War" game where students create fractions with the cards and must compare to find the larger of the two fractions. The cards are used to create and then order mixed numbers. They are easily movable and allow for quick action, and immediate reflection. They are also used for expanded notation, place value and estimation lessons. The cards will be used in the "Number & Operations" station. I am requesting the overhead playing cards in order to model the games. The Algebra "Hands-On Equations" Learning System enables the students to physically "set up" the given algebraic equation on a balance. Then students use "legal moves" with game pieces, to physically solve equations. This system makes algebraic linear equations accessible to all levels. This "Learning System" will be used in the "Algebra" station.

With your help, I can complete our math stations. The playing cards and overhead playing cards and the Algebraic Learning System are the three manipulatives needed to get my mathematicians on their way to success and fun! Thank you SO much for your help!
