Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hola! Hello to all of you. This year in one of my classes I have come across the challenge of working with a new student. Doesn't sound unusual right? It is when he is a new student, not only to my class, but to my school, my state and to my country. He has just moved from Mexico and I can not communicate with him well enough to teach him with my normal reading materials. Even if I could speak Spanish, which is limited to Hola, the materials I have are way over his head. I teach fourth grade reading, science and P.E. to two classes of students in which more than 50% of our population come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

I have had several ESL or ELL students over the years, but never one with whom I have been able to teach and communicate so little. We've only just begun school and I know he will learn quickly, but at this time I am trying to find materials that would benefit him as best as possible. My fourth grade curriculum as it is just can't possibly reach him. He can not understand the material. Please help me to be able to meet all of my students' needs, including his and others like him.

I have found materials, such as a Spanish chart, and ESL resource kit, and Spanish-English puzzle cards that would benefit him as soon as I am able to receive them. No longer would he just sit there as we are reading, feeling lost and left out. He and others at our school that are in the same situation would use the materials and be given the opportunity to work with materials that would enrich and speed up his/their acquisition of the english language.

I have felt helpless with this student this past week and you have the opportunity to help me make a difference in my teaching for this particular student. But these materials will be available to other teachers and students in my school as I will gladly share. Normally, our teaching methods, which have included ESL students before, have not been so difficult. But it seems we are being challenged with regular frequency and that these new students are coming with more and more of a limited English vocabulary. At this time, my ESL student is a nonverbal English student and without the aid of two other students in this class that speak Spanish, I would not even be able to communicate with him at all. I desperately need materials that he can work on to enable us and others like him to have a teacher- student relationship. Please consider funding me in my endeavor to teach ALL of my students.
