Bing - Bang - Boom: Drumming Into New Beginnings

My students need different types of African drums in order to learn hand drumming techniques, build an interactive understanding of the distinct sounds created in different regions of the continent, and have a hands-on supplement to learning about music of the world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have the wonderful opportunity to teach music to 700 students in K-8 "Turnaround School". These students attended one of the six lowest performing schools in the city, and are being given an opportunity for success through the "Turnaround School" model. With your help, my students could develop a lifelong appreciation and understanding of the arts through interactive performance opportunities.

This school year will not only mark the inception of a new academic climate at our school, but also a chance for students to participate in a music education program that is directly aligned with the state and national content standards. To ensure that these standards are achieved and exceeded, my students need the chance to participate in hands-on musical performance. Unfortunately, the our current opportunities offered to students are seriously limited by the available resources.

My students need three different varieties of African drums for this upcoming school year. I have a unit on African drumming prepared for grades K-8 that directs students to understand the differences in tone color between different drums, and experience playing traditional African drumming rhythms using the correct playing technique. To culminate the learning experience, students in grades K-8 will come together to perform beats composed in class for one another and for their parents or guardians.

You will make it possible for my students to better comprehend the cultural roots behind African drumming, and have a genuine performance experience in small groups. This unit will provide a meaningful, collaborative experience for students of all ages, and will bring parents and guardians into our school to support their children's musical endeavors. Thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
