I teach 5th grade mathematics in a wonderful school. Our school is a firm believer in challenging each child to achieve at their level. I teach approximately 78 students. The majority of my students are from low income families.

I have been in my current 5th grade math position for three years. I have incorporated literature into my math lessons previously and the students are always surprised that we are reading a book in math. The students then complete hands on activities that revolve around the book. I have also worked with the Language arts teacher to incorporate activities that correlate with the novels the students are reading in her class. It is important that the students see how math is ingrained in all subjects.

In order to create more lessons that combine literate and mathematics, I would like a teacher reference guide that outlines ideas for books that can be used at my grade level. I am also requesting a set of books that correlates with the reference guide. I am also a firm believer in hands on learning. I am requesting funding for student materials kits. These kits would allow me to create more lessons and activities that are hands on.

You will make it possible for each child in my room to have math materials to manipulate in interactive literature and math lessons. Thank you for supporting me to challenge each child to achieve in mathematics!
