Balancing Science In The Classroom

My students need 4 electronic metric balances for our science lab.

I teach seventh and eighth grade science. Our school is a high-poverty, high-need school. We are in a rural central Florida county.

The entire science wing of our school was severely damaged by three hurricanes that passed directly over our town in the summer of 2004. Almost all of our science equipment was damaged or destroyed. Our county schools are also going through major budget cuts. We use metric balance scales often in our science labs. The ones we have now are so old and out of adjustment that the students cannot make accurate measurements.

One of the strands of the Florida Sunshine State Standards for Science has to do with the scientific method and experimenting. We do several labs throughout the year. Many of them require measurements to get quantitative data. Using these electronic balance scales will help students to get nice accurate measurements. They will also help students in using metric measurements. Students need to get used to using metric measurements, since metrics are becoming more commonly used. The Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test has metrics on both the Science and Math portions of the test. Middle school students need to know how to use these balance scales to be prepared for high school science. They have many more labs in high school, which is only a year or two away for my students.
