Everyone Can Share With a Document Camera!

My students need a document camera so they can interactively share and show their individual work with the class.

"Dad! Mom! I got to show everyone my math problem and how I solved it differently!" My third graders will hopefully be saying this daily after leaving our classroom, feeling proud of the work they had done. The students in my classroom are from high-need communities, but I know their growth in math equations, reading strategies, and local city history are greatly going to increase this coming year.

Third graders love to show what they know, but many of them are not the faster writers. This can be a problem when students are asked to go up to the board and "show their work," because it takes a lot of time, and it's easy to lose the rest of the class's interest while just one student is writing. Yet, I want my students to all get the chance to share and compare/contrast their ideas daily with those of their peers. Also I would love to be able to show the students different examples and materials that can not be shown on black and white overheads.

However, there is a solution! Having a document camera would allow all my students to be able to bring up their assignments or projects and show them to the whole class, without having to re-write anything. It would save time and allow more students to interact. I believe it would give my students a lot more learning opportunities that normally we may not have time for. It would also allow for items, other than just writing to be shown up close to the entire class at one time.

What will your help do? You will create a stronger and more open learning community for my third grade class. My students, by having this technology, will learn how to express their thoughts and become more confident in their own learning and abilities. Most importantly, if you empower these students with tools for today, they have an even greater potential to grow into students that will be able to make a change in our tomorrow.
