Bringing U.S. History to Life Through Film

My students need a TV cart to safely store and transport the TV, VCR, and DVD player we've had donated to our classroom.

Who can forget the roar of the crowd when Martin Luther King concluded his "I have a dream" speech? The special effects in blockbusters like "Titanic" and "Pearl Harbor?" If you're an American citizen, chances are you have loads of memories like these, videos that you can replay in your mind. The ninth-grade students I teach at an urban Maryland high school have overwhelmingly not been exposed to these memorable moments that would help them connect and relate to American history. I'm asking you to help make that a reality for my classroom.

U.S. History was my favorite subject in high school, largely because my teacher helped make it relevant with film clips, surveys, and computers. Now I teach the same subject, but without the resources to teach the way that studies show students, especially those with special needs, learn best. There is only one TV shared by all of the teachers in my school, and our four LCD projectors are in almost constant use. At the same time my district funds an online service for streaming videos- enough film for me to show a relevant and motivating film clip at least every other day. Our library stocks a great selection of videos, but it's difficult for me to use these resources to their full potential because of the lack of TVs.

I knew this problem had a solution, and I found local donors for a used 32-inch TV, VCR, and DVD player. This would allow me to show short clips regularly, without preventing other classes from using the LCD projectors for note-taking and student presentations. The only thing left was a cart to store the television. The carts I've found at area garage sales are small microwave carts that would be unsafe for moving a heavy TV around my students. That's why I'm asking you to help me in the final step of bringing film into my classroom. A sturdy, tall TV cart will enable me to use the TV when I need to, store it, and also share it with my colleagues when necessary. This is a piece of equipment that has been standard in suburban classrooms for at least two decades; my students deserve the same as their peers across the USA.

Your donation towards our TV cart will help my ninth graders to experience the moments that define our collective identity as Americans. It will engage them, spark discussion, and truly make a difference in my classroom. Thank you for helping to give my students the school experience they deserve.
