My students need 8 sets of circuit boards, multimeters with batteries to run them, and optic lab kits in order to learn college preparatory electricity labs. In addition they need a function generator, AC/DC power supply, and oscilloscope for the classroom that will be used for demonstration and enrichment activities.
I am an 11th grade urban physics teacher. I have the honor of working with 70 students who have their sights set on going to college and being prepared. Our school focuses on scientific research and medicine and works to provide the students with a high quality education. My students not only want to go to college, but they are willing to work extra hard to get there by staying an extra hour everyday to accommodate a full schedule of challenging courses (no study halls!) and by participating in an extended school year that goes a month longer. As their teacher, I constantly seek out ways to make physics challenging yet fascinating.
This year we are actually adding on the 11th grade, as our school is only 2 years old. Having such enthusiastic students is a blessing, but unfortunately I do not have a budget or equipment to match their eagerness to learn. Being a new school, I'm starting from the ground up without any equipment. Luckily physics is all around us, so I hope to be creative, but there is much equipment that is essential to a rigorous college prep physics experience.
I want to do a full overview of the first year of college physics. I want my students to know basic electricity and magnetism, and to do that I need some equipment. Taking physics in 11th grade is an amazing academic achievement and I want my students to be rewarded with quality equipment and an intense survey of the field of physics. They will take the knowledge they gain from my physics course into their college experience.
With your donation you'll be encouraging my students to achieve their dreams of having a college education and you will prepare them for that experience. This equipment will provide the students with a wide range of laboratory procedures that I cannot otherwise give them. I assure you that your donation will provide a quality education for students who have a determination to be successful in our society.
