Flat Stanley Travels The World

My students need a set of books from the "Flat Stanley" series. They also need a collection of 39 books featuring the culture, food, shelter, and environments of different countries throughout the world.

I teach 1st grade in a small, low income school. Funding for books and supplies is next to nothing!

Last year,my class embarked on an exciting journey through geography and social studies. We read a book about a boy named Flat Stanley who gets flattened by a board. This tragedy turns out to benefit him as he can now fit into envelopes and be sent around the world. My class collected addresses from friends and families and sent letters all over the USA and the world. We received many in return and posted them on a world map. It was one of the most exciting units of the year, but one big thing was missing: books. My students wanted to know more about what the people looked like, what they ate, and how they lived. They received glimpses of the places our penpals wrote from, but were left wanting more.

I want to provide child-friendly books about people and places all over the world. This way, the project can also be integrated into the language arts. In addition, the students can embark on more independent "research" projects about the countries they are most interested in. The books will provide our class with a more holistic knowledge of the places we receive mail from and allow the students to independently find the answers to any additional questions they might have.

Many American students lack a strong understanding of the geography and different cultures of the world. By funding this project, you will help my class become world class citizens!
