The 5th Grade students need the periodical "Time For Kids" which includes 26 weekly issues to enhance the social studies curriculum.

TIME needs to be made in order to cover current events in a kid-friendly manner. I teach 5th grade to students from many different backgrounds. We are a Title I school, which means we have a high percentage of students that qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our student population comes from numerous cultures and almost 20 different languages are represented at our school.

To ask parents to send in money to subscribe to Time for Kids is taking away money from families that need that amount to pay for gas in their cars. Having opportunities like Donorschoose.org to donate funds and supplies greatly helps our community during tough financial times. My 5th graders often bring up current event topics they hear about through the media or from adult conversations. Often, it is hard to find ways to discuss these issues without stepping on toes about politics, ethics, or sensitive subjects.

Time For Kids offers a kid-friendly version of these current events so that we, as teachers, can freely and safely discuss world issues. It allows the students to discover the global world and make broader connections beyond the walls of our classroom.

Donorschoose.org can bring the world into our 5th grade classrooms by donating a subscription to Time for Kids to our 5th graders. This will make it possible for our students to be fully engaged in current events and social issues. Along the way, this supplement will improve reading comprehension and encourage independent thinking from the students.
