Painted Lady Butterfly Farm

My 125 7th grade science students need a butterfly habitat, food, and larvae.

I teach 7th grade science to 125 low income students. About 90% of my students are on the reduced lunch program.

We are in an inner city environment surrounded by concrete. This project was chosen to bring some "living nature" into their daily lives. It will be self-sustaining as the Painted Lady butterflies breed and reproduce year around. It will also be a living example for the importance of the web of life between plants, insects and animals, even in a city environment.

This purchase is for a self-sustaining butterfly culture/farm that we will house in the classroom on a long-term basis. It includes enough materials and supplies to get the project going at full speed.

My students have a great thirst for life science but not much opportunity to see it in action, since we are in an inner city environment. Last year we incubated, hatched and raised mallard ducklings and then released them into the wild. It was a HUGE hit among not only my students, but with the entire middle school student body and faculty. This butterfly culture is a year round project that will be just as well received as the mallard ducks were last year and should continue for the long term. As our Painted Ladies reproduce, we can release them into the wild right from our classroom!
