I am a first grade teacher in a community defined by a sixty mile radius. Because of the high unemployment rate and lack of industry our community depends on the state for most of its' income. Our state is rated among the bottom five for educational funding. The children here grow-up usually only knowing the area around us. The children that have traveled beyond the borders of Oklahoma are the children of migrant workers.

Due to the lack of income most of my children have never been on a family vacation. Bringing the world alive though hands-on activities and visual aides would give my students a chance to live vicariously though our studies. We have started our studies and the children are very exited about what they have learned and are eager to learn more about their world.

To help bridge the gap between my students and the world, I need visual as well as hands on materials. Globes will allow the children to understand the forms and distances between the continents. A screen would provide a place to show the materials, such as pictures, graphs, words from different languages, etc. I feel having a rug printed with the continents would give them a chance to move physically from continent to continent thus closing the gap between their world and the rest of the world. It would raise the level of excitement from the abstract to the concrete.

Your help in purchasing these items will give my children a gift of knowledge. The knowledge of the world around them and how they fit in. Understanding each others differences is the cornerstone to creating a world of peace. By studying the language, the cultures, the conditions of other people, we can learn to appreciate what we have and how our differences really make us more alike.
