Fly High with Technology

My students need a multimedia projector to show data they have collected as a team and discuss it with their class, to learn new calculator functions, and to watch videos and sites in relation to our lessons which will present real-world applications and show professionals using math concepts in their careers.

Ms. L. Bertie High School
Windsor, NC Grades 9-12

Technology and Math go hand-in-hand now. With our kids learning at a faster rate using technology these days, I should use more technology in my class. My students are the incoming, pioneering tenth-graders of our STEM school. I taught them during their ninth-grade, and will be teaching them again this coming school year. The way my students learn math in our class is quite different from the traditional classrooms. They learn as teams and discover the math involved in the lessons with their teams. It is a hands-on math class where they are expected to manipulate data and discover how mathematics helps them describe the world around them. We don’t only use paper and pencil to solve 50 math problems --- we dig in and talk about big questions set in the real world to see what the questions mean and what the equations represent! With this kind of environment, we are expected to use technology in class as part of their learning process and interaction. Unfortunately, we have limited resources. The only technology we use is the graphing calculator and the overhead projector. We have access to the computer laboratory, but this is also limited since we share this with the whole school. One of the challenges we face as a class is the need to project data from the computer or from the calculator for everyone to see. The overhead projector is limited to projecting transparencies and only the screen view of the calculator. Also, when learning new calculator functions we have a hard time learning new key strokes since some students are not able to follow all the steps I show them the first time. I will have to repeat the process again which not only takes up time from the class but also limits our chance to interact with the data. I have software (SmartView) on my computer that shows both the screen and key pad of the calculator, but have no way to show this to my students. Having a data projector in class would not only cut the time it takes for everyone to learn a new calculator function, but would also allow the students to fully interact with the data they have gathered as a class. This would help them have the chance to show to the class what they have come up with as a team and have a full discussion of the math involved in it. We get to talk more about what happened in their investigation and use technology with it. This would also expose them to more functions of the calculator and would motivate them to get involved in the class. This is technology and math working together. It is how our present generation is wired to think! With the data projector, I will also have the opportunity to show the kids videos and websites in class in relation to our lessons and how it is used by professionals in their careers. It would be amazing for them to see that these seemingly abstract math concepts are actually put on practice in the real-world, and that they do mean something other than just a bunch of numbers and letters. Your help in making this a possibility for my students would definitely make a difference in the way they learn math. I am sure that through this technology’s availability, my students would fly high with it!
