Exploring Careers Through Music Technology

There has been great excitement in my music department about forming rock bands, making audition recordings for colleges and honors ensembles, and recording their live concert performances. And there are some students who are budding recording engineers! I teach Music to grades 7-12 in a small, rural school that covers a broad geographic area. We aren't suffering, but budget funds are not always available for purchases beyond the basics. We have used eBay to purchase used instruments when the money just isn't available for new ones.

So many kids have asked to record things over the past year! Two fledgling rock bands (and there are more forming); a student who had to record an audition for the opportunity to perform overseas (he sold a lot of spaghetti dinners to get there!); several students who needed to send audition recordings for college applications. The list goes on. There are several who have a knack for mixing and editing sound, and will work for hours to get something "just right".

Currently, recording involves setting up a huge sound board on the stage, bringing in a computer from home, running a multitude of wires - the set-up process takes longer than the recording! A multitrack recorder would eliminate the massive gear needs and set-up/tear-down time. And we could record ANYWHERE - the privacy of our Music room, other classrooms, outdoors, live venues - and ANYTHING - concert performances, solo auditions, rehearsals, rock band practices and demos!

I feel in my heart that there have been many lost opportunities for my kids over the past few years where this kind of equipment could have helped. Students could have been turned on to an audio recording career if they'd had the hands-on experience. Many marginal students hang out in the music room with their guitars and drums before homeroom and after school - what would it mean to their interest in school if they could go there to record and refine something that they are passionate about? Ensembles could record and review their rehearsals in the Music room and critique their work. You can help them all!
