Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I want my fourth grade students’ eyes to sparkle with excitement when it is time for science in our class. One way to spark their interest to think like a scientist is to help them feel like a scientist. I would like to do this by providing accessories and tools that scientists wear and use in their labs. I am convinced that even the most reluctant students will desire to be at school for science when they know that in our class science lessons incorporate a sense of imagination and play with learning.

Our classroom schedule allows us to have 30 minutes for science. During this time, I would like the students to wear lab aprons and for each of them to have a pair of goggles. We are also in need of some measuring tools such as an electronic balance and spring scales.

These hands-on items give students the opportunity to explore and investigate like the experts in their fields. When students can use their imaginations to probe, they transform information into genuine understanding since they are “actively” learning. This year and in the future, rather than just seeing these accessories and tools in the science books, I would like my students to know what it is like to feel, think, and work as a scientist. It is my hope that an opportunity like this will spark an interest in a scientific career, but regardless, students will take their learning with them for a lifetime. My short-term goal is for more of my students to think of themselves as scientists, so they will have the confidence and desire to participate in the science fair this February.

Your donation will make a difference to my students in two substantial ways: 1) it will inspire their desire to learn and 2) it will demonstrate that there are adults who care about them. Many kids in my class come from homes with limited emotional and educational support so knowing that people care about them enough to contribute to their education will reinforce the importance of learning and that they matter.
