Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Corporate America, are you ready for individuals who are accountable for their actions and can think critically???? Help me teach my students these two essential skills. I teach at an inner-city school. The make up of the school is 98% Latino and 90-95% of our families are low income. Therefore, resulting in many of our students not being well prepared for the first day of school. Or, they may be prepared for ONLY the first few weeks of school. It is very difficult to get our students to replenish their supplies during the school year. I will be teaching 8th grade for the first time this year. I know that I am faced with many challenges such as, lack of motivation, disconnection, and lack of supplies. I can not let these obstacles get in the way of my teaching and in the way of my students' learning. My goal for this year is to teach my students how to engage with their text and really think critically about their reading, whether it be a non-fiction piece or a fictional story. In order to do so each student will be responsible for reading 30 minutes daily in my classroom during independent reading time. During this time they will read a self-selected book from our classroom library. My students will need to to turn in a letter to me once a week. In this letter they will include a 3-5 sentence summary, their thinking (of a character, the plot, the events, and questions that came up) and finally their questions to me or their responses to my questions. Since they are going to be reading daily and I am only collecting letters once a week I need to hold them accountable for their reading. In order to assure that they are engaging with the text they will need to take notes. This is where the post-it notes will come in handy. For example, if they are introduced to a character they really connect to they can quickly jot down their thoughts, comments or concerns on a post-it note and place it on the page and continue reading. Once they are ready to write their letter they can just gather their post-it notes and begin writing. I will then collect their letters along with post-it notes. This strategy is not only a great way to get them engaged and thinking about their reading but it holds them accountable for their own work. Since this is the first time in the upper grades I find myself in need of many resources to meet the needs of my students. I truly believe in this project. It really gets kids to engage with their text and be accountable for their reading. With your help I can teach my students these life long skills that are essential for the REAL WORLD!
