"A place for everything, and everything in it's place". For many of my students, school is the only place where there is order and predictability, much less any "personal space". These young children come from families who have been recently homeless, and many whose parents are struggling day-to-day with providing the basic necessities of life for their children. School is where they know they will get two meals and a child-centered routine.

One of the items that I have found to be necessary in the classroom is a place for each student to keep his/her own take-home papers/projects. It is like a mailbox...with your own name on it. It helps my students begin to learn to be organized and gives them a bit of space that is their own. I am opening a new classroom this year, and my school does not have the budget for any additional furniture, so I will need to find a way to provide this item myself. I am in California, where the budget issue is affecting schools around the state.

I have found a perfect unit that provides a slot for each child's papers at eye level, and also includes a space to keep each student's current reading level books, which is very useful for my beginning readers.

Your can help provide a truly important personal space for my students this year and for many years to come.
