Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A real masquerade party? In the classroom? That's right! My 9th grade students will have a ball (literally) once they design and create a mask to wear to our masquerade ball. The students will be reading "Romeo and Juliet" at the end of the semester and what better way to end a class than with a masquerade party to celebrate a wonderful year while drawing connections to the Elizabethan era and the Masquerade party that takes place in the play!

I've never had a bad experience teaching "Romeo and Juliet" because the students instantly relate to the family feuds, the young characters, and the emotions of these characters. Naturally, I save this read until the end of the semester as a way of keeping students' interests up until the very last day of school. Because the unit goes so well, I have always allowed for an end of the year Elizabethan party in which the students may dress up, bring in cultural foods, and play music (so long as it relates to the Elizabethan era.) This year, I'd like to take it one step further by creating masks, similar to the ones Romeo and Juliet wore the first time they met each other.

My students will need foam mask kits, feathers, sequins, and glitter to design and create masks to wear at our Masquerade Party. Students are being rewarded for an excellent unit and year while experiencing the life of Elizabethan Masquerade Party.

You will make it possible for my students to be creative in designing their own mask. We can't thank you enough for your help and support!
