Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
High-Need Community is Raising the Bar for Learning Science! I teach all subjects to 2nd graders in a public school that serves a poor urban area. I teach at a public charter school. Between 80%-90% of our students receive free lunch and we are located in a low socio-economic area. Because we are associated with a University, many people think we have lots of money.
The fact of the matter is that we use the educational research from that University to guide our instruction, but we are just a public school receiving funding from our state (and not a University). Teachers at my school spend between $500-$700 on their own supplies each year on average. Our biggest academic obstacle is Science. We have built a rigorous program to support our students, but the Science resources are still lacking. Our school community is out to prove that good instruction and engaged students can create academic success (regardless of poverty, ethnicity, etc.).
I am embarking on a new project to cognitively guide science instruction. I plan to direct my students' own natural curiosity and their exploration to create a fantastic science community. As we explore science (life cycles, weather, motion, insects, etc.), I will use the Science Discovery Chest, Butterfly nursery, and Microscope in engaging the students. Once my students have explored the topic, we are going to video tape Mini Science Lessons, created by them, written by them, and filmed by them. By doing this, my kiddos will merge Science, Writing, Creativity, and Technology skills. Additionally, they will have a lasting product to show parents, other students, and the community.
I try to empower my students. I want them to feel like the own their knowledge....that they have gained something through the experiences and guidance they get with me. Most of all, I want my students to rise above what is expected of them. I want them all to know what it feels like to be smart and to shine. This project allows them to learn and explore Science. It also lets them take the stuff they learn, write about it, teach it, and film it.
