This grant will have an incredible impact on third graders at this South Carolina elementary school. The resources I am requesting will be used year after year and will affect hundreds of students who enter my classroom. I teach in a self-contained third grade class. I teach all subjects. 38% of our population receives free or reduced lunch and has limited educational experiences and resources at home.

Although I read aloud to my students each day, it is not enough. Many children leave school and do not have the opportunity to read at home or to be read aloud to. As a teacher, I want my students to have as many opportunities to read and to be read to as possible. I have created a listening center in my classroom to do just that. Our listening center is a special place in my classroom where students can listen to fabulous literature on tape, however most of the titles I have are fiction. I am requesting a variety of non fiction and historical fiction titles to add to our extremely popular listening center. Third graders will hear narrators read with expression and learn the importance of using diction and voice when reading aloud.

I am requesting a variety of non-fiction and historical fiction titles including the biographies of Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Thomas Jefferson as well as unique historical fiction titles that include: Why Don't You Get A Horse, Sam Adams?, Shhhh! We're Writing the Constitution, and What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin?. I am also requesting a variety of science read alongs that will introduce my students to the fascinating lives of Sea Turtles, Wolves, Whales, and Sharks. With your help, my students will be able embrace the many joys of books by reading along with and listening to stories of the past, biographies of famous Americans, and factual information about real animals in our world.

Your help WILL make a difference in the lives of children. Not only will your generous donation help improve students' listening, fluency, and comprehension skills; it will promote a life-long love of non-fiction and historical reading as well.
