I teach in an urban school with a high needs population of students. My fifth graders are eager and willing to devour any learning that comes their way. Many of them come form families where a home computer is a dream that just doesn't fit in the household budget. I strive to expose my students to the resources and skills that they need to be successful in school and in life. One of the most important skills is to become a proficient user of a computer. I'm sure that I don't need to explain in detail how essential this skill is. Every aspect of our lives is touched by the computer. I currently only have two computers that are available whenever we need them during the school day. Unfortunately, there are no funds in sight to purchase more. A computer is an expensive donation but one whose value is immeasurable. With this computer, students will learn valuable word processing skills as they publish original written work. They will practice and hone research skills as they navigate websites to produce content related projects. Students will use the unique features of the iMac to create podcasts (mini radio shows) of their written work, current events, and book recommendations, as well as Book TV episodes where they review books on iMovie and post them on self created websites. My students are already learning these valuable technologies but need more face time with the computer to make their learning tangible. With the addition of just one computer to our classroom I estimate that each day nine more students will have increased access to technology. We CANNOT make this happen without you. Even a partial donation will get us one step closer to providing students with a valuable technological education. Please consider making this generous donation for our classroom.
