This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is full of engaging activities from exploring challenging controversial questions to small group discussions, whole class activities where students get out of their seats to debate a topic, to using technology to better understand the core themes of a literary work.

My students range from all over Los Angeles, often riding the bus over two hours a day to attend a school where they feel challenged, supported, and inspired to learn, to graduate, and to achieve greatness.

They are multicultural with over 70 languages spoken, and a shining reflection of what it means to come together in pursuit of education and academic success. A majority of the students hail from low-income families, are first generation college goers, and despite some of the social, emotional, and financial challenges and stereotypes, yearn to surpass negative labels that might keep them from achieving their dreams. Many are struggling readers who are looking for books that they feel connect with their lives, their stories, and the things overall that matter to them. By bringing a book like The Alchemist into the classroom, I believe my students can more easily appreciate the power of literature and how it really does have a direct correlation to their personal story.

My Project

Each of us has a journey that we embark on, and that journey carries us throughout our lives. But what is this journey if we do not listen to the signs? These requested copies of The Alchemist is all about teaching us to look for the signs in life—signs that tell us which direction is the right one. I plan to use this novel to help students explore their own paths—to consider their lives a quest in and of itself, and to write a narrative in which they explore that quest personally and intimately.

Teaching in an urban school environment often requires diversion from canonical literary choices.

Books like The Alchemist are an excellent avenue into re-viewing literature, showing students that literature CAN reflect their personal experiences. I believe that my students will not only fall in love with this book—much like I did when I was younger—but see it as an awakening toward a new perspective on how to view the world, their world, our world.
