I teach middle school science in one of the few K-8 public schools in our state. Many of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunches. Our school grew into a K-8 building from an elementary school, and we don't have a lot of the equipment that a typical middle school does.

Our class is part of a 3-year research project funded by the National Science Foundation to test new "hands-on" middle school science lessons. I have reviewed all of the materials, and it is an amazing opportunity for students to actually do science. Our students will be doing activities almost every day (which is great), but some of the materials are much more hazardous than the baking soda and vinegar we have used in the past. Now they will be using concentrated sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid.

We absolutely need safety goggles and gloves to take part in this project. I have gotten along without them in the past by using harmless materials and teacher demonstrations. The NSF grant has provided us with some fancy probes and specialized equipment, but they incorrectly assume we have basic lab supplies. Safety equipment is the most critical item in a long list of supplies we need to take part in the project.
