My Roald Dahl author study project needs 6 copies of 4 books, 1 copy of "Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes" and an audio copy of "James and the Giant Peach".
If you ask most third graders about "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" they will tell you about the movie they saw with Johnny Depp and some orange guys. Little do these students know that "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" started as a beloved children's book by a very famous author.
My third grade classroom is comprised of children from many socio-economic levels and ethnic backgrounds. Many of them come to me with little knowledge of literature beyond a few books they have read in 2nd grade. Many of them don't even realize that most of the shows and movies they love to watch started out as novels or books written decades ago.
Roald Dahl is the author of many such books that have been turned into movies; James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and, of course, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His work is captivating and I have seen in the past how his books have hooked young readers.
I propose to do a year long Author's Study on Roald Dahl to foster a love for literature, help children analyze the similarities and differences among books, and to create an understanding of how books can be adapted into screenplays. This author's study will involve students communicating in groups about the book they are reading. Throughout the year, they will rotate books to experience a variety of work by the same author. They will be able to work with their group on a number of book studies and projects that create independent, life long readers. We will listen and read along with audio books and hold classroom "book talks".
By funding this project, you will open my students up to a world of literature that they have never experienced before. You will be giving them the opportunity to become life-long readers with an appreciation and critical eye for literature. You will help create students who will never watch another movie the same way again. They will realize there is more to the chocolate factory than meets the eye!
