Once a Pond a Time

My students need hands-on experience with liiving organisms that teaches respect and responsibility for the environment. We need plants to provide oxygen, animals to fertilize the plants, and algae eaters (snails) to keep the water clear. My children will develop a more complete understanding, through cultivating a hydroponic garden on the surface of the pond. Students will develop critical science, art, and language arts skills as they create a journal recording changes in the pond. Hanging folders will help the children organized their matierals independently.

This project expired on January 3, 2009.

I teach first graders with high aspirations. But to become the scientists, doctors, and leaders they want to be, they need to overcome personal and cultural limitations. They have the potential and the drive. They lack the tools. Often limited vocabulary and limited experience make it challenging for my kids to distinguish among concepts such as puddle, pond, lake, and ocean. Too frequently lack of control in their own lives limits their understanding of how their actions impact their environment.

At this primary stage of development there simply is no substitute for real contact and control in a real environment. This project will give my students the experience that is the basis for learning in all of our studies--science, language arts, vocabulary development, visual expression, teamwork, and math.

My kids will work as a team to create the pond. They will problem solve and cooperate to add water to the container. They will learn to respectfully brainstorm a list of what can go into our pond. I will assist them with the research to confirm what can live in our pond and what each living thing needs from the pond environment. Each student will create and maintain a running journal of the creation and changes in our pond and their personal contributions.

The living animals that are effected by our choices and the special materials let my kids know that their choices are important. The gift of a stranger tells my kids that what they are learning is significant. Please be the one to tell my kids that who they are and what they do matters.
