Bringing Shakespeare's Words to Life

My students need an LCD projector in my classroom in order to closely read lecture notes and text passages, power point presentations, fellow student draft essays for peer editing, voice lesson warm-up writing exercises, and English subtitles when viewing Shakespeare plays.

Ms. B. Los Osos High School
Rancho Cucamonga, CA Grades 9-12

I teach American Literature and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition, respectively, to eleventh and twelfth grade students. Most of my eleventh graders and all of my twelfth graders intend to go to college.

These days, with so much access to multimedia among my students, they have grown accustomed to receiving input via multimedia. Their attention spans are short, they struggle with close reading of written texts, and they especially struggle with understanding Shakespeare or Nineteenth century English and American texts, which are required for success on the Advanced Placement tests they are preparing to take.

I need a good quality LCD projector for my classroom because currently I only have a 32 inch color television in my room, which is inadequate for projecting lecture notes or power point slide materials, or films of plays. Although the television is connected to my computer and my DVD player, it is impractical to use. Power point presentation slides cannot be read by students unless the font is at least 38 points. 38 point font on my television means one word per slide! Thus, I cannot use power point lecture notes for my classes. Similarly, when I show Shakespeare plays on my television, I also show subtitles, because students have great difficulty understanding the dialogue if they only hear it spoken--and they also have difficulty by only reading it and not hearing how the words should be pronounced. However, reading the text while viewing the action brings the play to life for students, causing them to engage with the text more. Unfortunately, with a 32 inch screen, the words are hard to read, and the pictures are also too small to see clearly. An LCD projector would enable me to enlarge the scenes the students are watching, and would therefore allow them to read large font as well.

Your generous donation will enable me to teach more effectively by enabling me to provide my students with easy-to-read lecture notes and power point presentations, visual texts and play performances with subtitles that will bring the texts alive for them, make the words more understandable to them, and unlock the power of Shakespeare's language for them.
