How To Save The World

The world needs the help of youth. Students must know the important roles that they can fulfill, not only in their schools, communities, and country, but in the greater world. The seniors of my high school are a diverse population, representing a variety of ethnic groups, and including a variety of countries such as Ethiopia, Mongolia, and El Salvador. This project services two English Twelve classes made up of students who struggle academically. Most seniors are getting ready to go to college, enter the workforce, or serve their country. It is a time of finding their place in this world and realizing the power that each person has. It is a time for critical thinking and analysis of culture, industry, and our role as citizens. This book provides students with a graphic novel that addresses the current environmental crisis. The form is both engaging and educational. We will read this novel in conjunction with the book "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn. Having taught "Ishmael" for the first time last year, I was inspired by my students' response. Our discussions in class were engaging and enlightening and students cared about the topic. They had so much to say and made their voices heard in class, at home, and in the larger community. This graphic novel allows students to see a different perspective and urges youth to rise to the challenge of how to save the world. Your help will make it possible for students to see the value and importance of being active citizens of our country and our world. It will inspire students to work towards a greener and sustainable world. My project needs 27 copies of "As The World Burns." It will help students to realize that even one person can make a large difference in the lives of others, in the state of our environment, and will help them see the worth of their duties as civilians, reinforcing the importance of democracy in our country.
