Did you know that 85% of the juveniles who appear in court and 75% of unemployed adults are illiterate? Former Secretary of Education Rod Page once said, “Children who do not learn to read early on are at risk of being left behind. And yet, seven out of ten inner-city fourth graders can’t read proficiently. This is unacceptable — our children deserve better. . .” Welcome to my classroom. I am the teacher of an inner-city fourth grade where 40% of my incoming students failed their state reading exam. According to statistics, my students are already doomed to a life in prison or on the streets. But, with your help, I am determined to change their life path.

Our Declaration of Independence states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". Research has repeatedly proven that the gateway to opportunity is literacy: without it, you’re barred access to entire fields of knowledge. So how does our educational system help struggling young readers? It pounds dry, monotonous, scripted curriculum into their heads; and, if they fail the first time, it forces them to repeat the curriculum over and over until they can regurgitate what is expected. Mark Twain wisely said, “The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them.” Reading should be a thrilling adventure — one of laughter and tears and learning and self-fulfillment. It should not be so treacherous that a child would rather be sent to the office for misbehavior than be forced to read!

I want to create a classroom environment that dispels the monotony of basal reading and encourages a lifetime love of real reading. I have collected over 300 excellent books for this cause but I still need to create an inviting environment. I want to dedicate a corner of my classroom solely to reading. I want to give my students a fun, relaxing, comfortable environment with bean bags and rugs that visually represent the exciting discoveries inside the books surrounding them.

With your help, my students will learn to love reading and, in the process, change their lives forever.
