I teach in a high-need, urban area school with limited funds for additional classroom materials. This proposal provides a class-set of the novel, "The Witches" by Roald Dahl for my fourth grade classes.

My fourth grade students need real experiences with LITERATURE to develop the desire and understanding of the importance of good language and writing skills. The district-provided anthology/text does not provide students the contact with complete works. By reading only sections of books, they never develop an understanding of the complete idea or plot of a story or the development of the characters in fiction. Consequently, they have little reason to become engaged in their reading.

I need class sets of novels that allow my students the necessary exposure to award winning literature needed to develop their understanding of language, writing, and grammar. Each student needs to be provided with their own copy of these novels to be read together in a classroom setting and to be re-read on their own. I have learned that by providing these experiences for involvement with great literature, I am able to engage students in the learning process in a much more active way. Rather than teach the reading skills and comprehension strategies as applied to individual chapters, whole novel analysis creates learning opportunities that remain with students much longer. I've had students from previous years come back and discuss the characters, plots, and authors of the literature I've exposed them to in their fourth grade class. This is the reward of these experiences that your donation will provide.

You contribution to this proposal will provide my class with the resources to experience an enjoyable and remarkable piece of literature ideal for my fourth graders. This gift will provide the same opportunity for many years of memorable literature lessons to my present as well as future students.
