How do students learn best? My fifth grade students, all with varied ability levels, have shown me that everyone does not learn the same way. However, if there could be one medium that allows students to work to their abilities while reaching a common goal, it would have to be the use of technology. In this era of text messages and emails, many of my students have entered fifth grade without the desire or motivation to write creatively. It has often been an arduous task in preparing them for our state's mandated writing assessment near the end of each school year. As a result, test scores reflect this area as a weakness. I have sought to use digital storytelling to encourage students to use writing as a tool to plan and create a digital story. While writing may not be the final product of a digital story, it is the pathway students must take to create it. The saying "if it ain't on the page then it ain't on the stage" is just as true for digital storytelling as it is for theater and movies. In fact, media production is a great way to engage students in writing in an authentic way. A completed digital story is made of photographs taken by students, clay animation, or scanned pictures and student narration. Combined with the writing skills that students employ in the process of creating their digital stories, a digital camera, scanner, modeling clay, and microphone are necessary in creating a finished product. Digital Storytelling is a modern day way to tell a story. It's a way to engage even the most reluctant writers, allow all students to excel, and create a meaningful work of art to share with others. With your assistance, my students will be more enabled to use their creativity and produce work that is more reflective of their abilities.
