Yes – Lots of these kids are missing those two front teeth. But what beautiful smiles our second graders have when they are learning math. My classroom is a diverse second grade classroom in California. These wonderful seven and eight year olds are all from military families. Our hardworking military families need your help! Many kids have a parent currently overseas (mostly in Iraq). As you can imagine, their lives are pretty stressful. Many are worried about a deployed mom or dad. Our school is primary low income and has limited financial resources.
2nd grade is an important time to master basic math facts. Automatic recall of basic addition facts and subtraction facts is essential. Memorizing the basic facts is dreaded and slow for many students. It is amazing how many of them are sure of the answer for 3 + 4. 2nd graders also need to master the essential life skills of telling time and counting money. Learning these basic skills takes a lot of practice and needs to be interesting. I often hear, “It’s boring.” or “It’s too hard.” It is really painful to watch them dread this part of math.
My class needs fun, “ouchless”, interactive ways to master these skills. Math wraps are an amazing tool which makes mastering the basic facts fun. These math wraps are hands-on, friendly manipulatives that help our kinesthetic learners learn their addition facts in an interactive way. Students wrap the string from the problem on the left to the answer on the right, and then turn the Wrap-ups over to see if they got it right. I currently have three of these in my class and students are always asking if they can use a wrap. Math bingo games are another great interactive way to keep kids engaged while learning basic skills. Along with giving the students lots of practice, I can also use this to assess who needs extra help. I often find students have an answer on their bingo card but don’t know it!
I need a class set of Math Addition Wraps, and a set of math bingo games to help my students master addition, subtraction, time, and money. With a whole class set of addition wraps we can all practice together and I will never have to tell a student, “Sorry you can’t do a Wrap because I don’t have enough of them.”
You can make a huge difference! Be our hero and please donate now!
