Writing Our World

My students need 60 white binders, poster board, copy paper, markers, stickers.

I am a seventh grade teacher in North Carolina. The majority of my students are African-American, Hispanic, with a small percentage being white. The majority of the children I teach live in a low socioeconomic community.

The students score below the norm on the state achievement assessment in writing. The students need many opportunities to strengthen their ability to write.

The Writers Workshop involves the use of many materials, not provided by the school; however, these are crucial for a successful program. The materials requested in this grant proposal will assist the students' writing improvement. In order to create the optimal learning environment for the Writers Workshop many posters about process writing and genres are to be displayed. The poster board will allow the students to create the posters, fostering their personal involvement. The poster board will also be used for small group projects. The blank books are for their original writing for the class library. The art supplies, such as story paper, and markers, are for illustrations about their writing. The stickers are for motivational purposes to celebrate success in the Writing Workshop. The binders are used to store the students work in the classroom. This is where students store all of their writing ideas.

The Writers Workshop, equipped with the materials requested, will provide the learning environment essential to improve my students' writing growth. In order to fulfill this project for my students the supplies are necessary to have a successful Writers Workshop experience. This will allow them to pre-write, draft, revise, edit, and publish their responses to their real world experiences.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
