Spies on a Secret Mission

My students need three handheld GPS units.

Every kid imagines he’s a spy on a secret mission. In the real world there are not many secret missions (except if you really are a spy) but geocaching is pretty close. Does that sound exciting? Education must be exciting. Each day I am filled with that enthusiasm for my students. I teach gifted education in a Title 1 school to fourth and fifth graders.

I want to introduce my students to Global Positioning Systems commonly known as GPS units. There is true learning and higher order thinking at hand with these tools. Grants are a way of obtaining funds for my students to harness the power these units hold.

By purchasing 3-5 GPS units, I plan to introduce a variety of lessons using the GPS. Treasure hunting is a basic name for geocaching. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. Geocaching, is about mental challenges as well as physical. Puzzles here range from looking up simple information to solving complex cryptography. Others have no particular strategy - you just have to stare at them long enough until you see the pattern and can produce coordinate numbers from it. While life is full of intellectual challenges, we don’t often have the time to sit down and focus on a particular problem which is purely intellectual and learn at the same time. There are many other learning opportunities I plan to expose to my children including latitude, longitude, and geography. By having GPS units for my children to use, this will open a new door for us. A new door for learning.

If you choose to become a donor, you will help to empower the minds, hearts and imaginations of true treasure hunters. You will help them be the problem solver, the mapmaker, the explorer and raise their thinking to a higher level. You will make it possible.
