Learning about the Harlem Renaissance through Literature

My students need 40 copies of "Harlem Summer" by Walter Dean Myers.

Grades 6-8

As a seventh grade English teacher at a high need middle school in Southern California, our African American students are in need of culturally relevant books that will serve as a springboard for our students to become lifelong lovers of literature. My educational philosophy supports the great African American abolitionist and reformer Fredrick Douglass who once said, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."

In the community surrounding our school, the county library closed in August of 2008. In order for students to access the next local library, they must travel through several gang invested neighborhoods.

In the novel "Harlem Summer" by Walter Dean Meyers, the main character Mark Pervis is a 16 year old African American male who spends his summer struggling between doing what is right and succumbing to the traps of the street. This theme mirrors the lives of my students on a daily basis. Obtaining a classroom set of this novel will benefit my students in that they will be engaged in reading a culturally relevant book they can relate to.

Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to escape the ills of their community through literature. This donation will help build strong children by instilling a cultural connection to the rich history of our forefathers. An enriched spirit cannot be broken.
