Blast Off! 1,2,3...My second grade class is going on an expedition to learn about the sun, moon, and stars. We are a public charter school that serves students from diverse academic, social and economic backgrounds.

Our state standards require that students show how the moon rotates and revolves around the Earth, and how the Earth rotates and revolves around the sun. Also, students should be able to name the different phases of the moon. This information is not taught in isolation but in conjunction with how the orbits of the sun, Earth, and moon effect the seasons, shadows, daylight, and night.

Current educational research suggests that students learn best when they have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning, thus aligning with the old adage:"Showing or doing is always better than telling." When we allow the students the opportunity to interact with a concrete visual model of the orbits of the sun, moon and Earth, it helps to reinforce the information that we are teaching. This resource along with having the students create a "human" model will help our students understand the abstract concept of "outer space" more concretely.

Education can make the difference in a child's life. With your support you can help children want to learn. The sun, moon, and Earth orbiter supplied by your generous donations will give the students in my second grade class the knowledge and awareness of their "place in space."
