This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
So, what does YOUR DNA look like?
Understanding DNA is such a crucial part of Biology. I teach sophomore Biology and as you might imagine, teaching Biology to a bunch of 15 year-olds isn't exactly exciting for them.
So instead of looking at DNA in a book or pictures of it in PowerPoint, they get a chance to see what their ACTUAL DNA looks like by extracting it themselves. I had the opportunity to use these kits several years ago, and the students just ate it up. They were very engaged and very proud to be able to wear their own actual DNA in a necklace and show it around. It really gets the students involved and excited with DNA. It also really allows for good transition into subjects like cloning, genetic engineering, etc....
All I need is 4 classroom kits and my students can become engaged and see their DNA come alive while staying aligned with California State Standards.
Again, DNA is such a crucial part of the understanding of Biology and is needed as they continue on their educational path. This project will really help them get excited about DNA and all of its applications.
