This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A Magnet School of Excellence that focuses on communication, visual and performing arts, these fourth grade students come together from a wide variety of neighborhoods and from a range of socio-economic backgrounds and work together to form a strong classroom and family.
This is a district wide reading enrichment program. The purpose of the program is to encourage recreational reading, to offer a variety of types of literature, to increase familiarity with different authors, and to share books through written and oral expression. Research has found that students who participate in free voluntary, or recreational reading did as well or better in reading comprehension tests than students whose only source of reading was classroom basal reading instruction. It has been proven that reading as a leisure activity is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed.
The program is only for the fourth graders and the number of books available in the Media Center is limited. The classroom teachers are encouraged to read these books to their classes. The students are also being urged to use the area public libraries as well as the local book stores. However, most do not have the money or the time to purchase the books or go to the library. I would like them available to check out from the classroom.
In late March or early April, the fourth graders will be given a written test to select each class BOB Team. The test is to determine which students are the most familiar with all the stories from the books on the list. All participating schools have their local battle following the testing. The winning school team will move on to participate in an Area Battle and the District Battle will follow that.
