I teach art to some "really great" kids, many of whom live in "not so great" conditions of poverty (some live in an orphanage). We are all part of a rural school, in an at-risk North Carolina county where only 13% of the adults attended college.

Art is one of the classes that give kids something to look forward to at school — but — I teach six art classes a day (to a total of 600 students) on an embarrassing budget of $500 a year. That only covers the "bare-bones basics", so last year, I spent $1000 of my own money trying to make art class projects captivating and challenging for my kids.

I teach two 6th grade, two 7th grade and two 8th grade classes a day. This year I want to elevate the level of my 8th grade classes by implementing more sophisticated "hands-on" projects — I want to have my 8th grade classes design and create ceramic mosaics and apply them to small table tops that they can auction off as a fund raiser for the following year's class. But we have to get started and I need to purchase broken pieces of ceramics from a vendor that sells them.

With your help, my kids can bring their mosaic creations alive — especially when they realize that people are willing to buy their works of art.
