S.O.S. If Only...

My students need 28 copies of the classic account of the final hours of the Titanic titled "A Night to Remember."

I have been teaching hands on for 12 years. I teach 28 fifth graders in a rural Indiana community. I believe that students learn the best when they are actively engaged and truly interested in what they are learning. Each year I make it a goal of creating a stunning unit which incorporates math and science for my students to study, read about, and also remember for a lifetime. This year, our school theme is searching for treasure. So, I decided that we would dive down deep into history and science with reading and learning about the Titanic disaster.

Now, I have personally (and passionately!) purchased 12 fabulous Titanic resource books, two Titanic DVD movies, a 100 page Titanic teaching guide (which includes numerous science experiments and math problems), a readers' theater about the Titanic, the novel "A Night to Remember" for me to read (which I have and fell in love with!), and cassette tapes of the novel. The obstacle? I did not foresee the books costing what they do. My ship has sunk without your help!

Students fall in love with reading when the right books are placed in their hands. Each year, I encourage students to read and learn from all kinds of books, including historical nonfiction (which is typically not their favorite). I wish to place "A Night to Remember" in each of my student's hands so that they can travel to the depths of the Atlantic, and to an era of confidence and arrogance. We will make numerous discoveries along the way including topics such as: reading comprehension, map reading, math word problems, morse code, buoyancy experiment, bar graphs, debates, propaganda, cooking scones, icebergs, water temperatures, and brainteasers.

You will make this year's dream unit a reality! Save me and my boatload of ideas and passion. If only the ice conditions had been normal, if the night had been moonlit, if the Titanic hit the ice any other way, if the Titanic carried enough boats, if the Californian had only come, if so many people had not believed the Titanic was truly unsinkable, if only all of the lifeboats had been full... If only I could get my hands on these novels, my students could find the treasure of learning while discovering the Titanic. My only "if only" is a set of this wonderfully written novel, SOS!!!
