As a first-year teacher last year, I was empowered and overwhelmed at the same time. Before the year started, I received the grand opportunity to become a Freedom Writer teacher. The inspiration and guidance of Erin Gruwell and 150 other seasoned teachers further convinced me of my career choice. Then the year started. You cannot possibly learn the intricacies of teaching any other way than being thrown in the mix. Teaching seventh graders also challenges even the veteran teachers. At that age, they are so opinionated and often wrapped up in themselves. I struggled at times, yet found strength in the transformation of my students. I teach in a rapidly changing community. The city is moving into the suburbs with mixed reactions. Many of my students simply support the opinions of their guardians. My decision was to suggest they develop their own opinions on the changes in their community and the issues of our world

With our entire nation discussing the topic of immigration, what better issue to bring to the forefront for my students. Many of my students harbored very negative opinions of the humans that crossed our border. I allowed great debates on the issue of immigration, but never harmful or destructive viewpoints on groups of people. I attempted to never reveal my own opinion, but rather introduce them to varying perspectives in hopes that they develop a more rounded ideal.

I only had one copy of Ann Jaramillo's book "La Linea". It is a story of a 15 year-old boy who attempts to cross the United States border in hopes of reaching his parents in California. As I read the book aloud with my students, I realized the issue had never been humanized. They couldn't connect immigration to a single living breathing person, much like themselves. When they did, their perspectives reached an epiphany. I want to take it to the next level with my second group of students. I would love for them to grow as readers as we discuss these issues. Which is why I'm requesting 15 copies of "La Linea" and 15 copies of Sandra Cisneros' "The House on Mango Street", another great introduction to the life of immigrants in the U.S. I want to have my classes read these two books and discuss the issues that our leaders are attempting to decipher. As they work together, the seed of empowerment in learning will flourish.

Now I need some help. You have the amazing opportunity to aid a rookie teacher in transforming his classroom. As I said before, my own opinion on the issue is irrelevant. What matters is that I give my students every opportunity to develop their own ideals. With so many people focusing on the negative aspects of immigration, our nation's students deserve to hear the story from the direct participants. These students are the ones who will eventually have to make decisions that will drastically change the face of our nation. Together we can ensure that in 20 years we will have well-rounded citizens that are more than willing to research, develop, and voice their opinions. And it is my hope as their teacher that they view the impact their decisions have on real human beings. People just like themselves.
