Can you imagine spending ALL DAY writhing in hard, unforgiving student desks? They're great if you're raising future Dilberts of America, but I want thinkers, innovators, and creators, and for that, they need to get up and move around. They need to sprawl, and curl up in a corner with a notebook and write their little hearts out.

Currently, my classroom is furnished with 20 year old (or older) desks that provide for a factory-model educational experience. I want to create learning zones where hands-on learners can move about and think.

While donors should not fear a total abandonment of all structure, at a proper point in the class schedule, students should be permitted to move about freely to collaborate, write, or edit. Some students who are more "wiggly" would really benefit from an opportunity to change positions. Not every teacher realizes this, but I do. Some students need an opportunity, with teacher guidance to get into different "zones."

Donors, especially those who are parents, or those who are creative thinkers, perhaps understand the need to try new and different styles of learning. Certainly the traditional classroom is effective; however, opportunities to breakout into different classroom structures also enable some students. This translates into students someday embracing their learning and working styles when they leave high school and best knowing how they will be effective employees.
