DIRT Across The Curriculum

In order to implement a team wide DIRT (Daily Independent Reading) time for our students, my team will need 2 cases of copy paper for record keeping, reading logs and student book projects. We will need 2 boxes of multicolored letter sized file folders for storage of student reading logs and notes and 4 file folder bins (1 per teacher on a 4 teacher team) for file storage. We will need a box of 1 x 2.5 inch file folder laser printer labels. We will need 4 black ink cartridges for a Dell A920 printer.

Middle school students need to get DIRTy every day to improve their reading skills! My team of 7th graders would benefit tremendously from a team wide Daily Independent Reading Time. I am a middle school Language Arts teacher and would like for every teacher on my team to provide time daily for students to read in their class.

Reading across the curriculum is a goal that my school advocates. However, providing the extra materials needed to efficiently implement this program is not a priority within our school's budget. Asking teachers to dip into their own very minimal resources to run the program properly is unfair. I would like to provide everyone on my team of four teachers the supplies that they need to keep records and provide students the supplies necessary to maximize this classroom time. The easier I can make it for them, the more positive the result.

We need some very basic supplies that will facilitate this Daily Independent Reading Time. Research has shown that a daily reading program raises the test scores of young readers and makes them more likely to be life-long readers/learners. We need 2 cases of copy paper for record keeping, reading journals and student projects. We also need 2 boxes of file folders, a box of printer labels and 4 file folder storage bins (1 per person on a 4 teacher team). Finally, we will need 4 black ink cartridges for a Dell A920 printer.

Students are immeasurably impacted in all aspects of their education by an effective independent reading program. My team would like to provide time everyday for all of us to be reading teachers. We want to show our students that reading is learning. Daily reading will increase the schema students need to understand the content presented throughout the curriculum. We need your help in acquiring the materials to successfully provide this most beneficial program for our students. Thank for your consideration.
