Graphic novels are needed by students in my English Language Arts classroom because the combination of text and illustration helps grab the attention of these fast paced students and helps provide a bridge to connect literacy and imagination.
I am happily looping with the students that I taught in seventh grade. They have basically exhausted my library and I would love to offer them some tasty new material that will appeal to their eighth grade tastes.
Placing graphic novels in our English Language Arts classroom will help me connect students with the visuals they are constantly bombarded by. I believe having this new genre available in our library will have a great effect, especially on those adolescents that feel like books are BORING! My English Language Learners will truly enjoy reading these 'picture books' as well, and I am sure reading them will help build their confidence as readers.
Students’ interest in graphic novels helps them to identify themselves as readers. Placing the 19 'classic' graphic novel titles that I have selected in our classroom will help broaden the students' reading horizons and help them experience the power of giving firsthand! I can only imagine them devouring classics such as "Romeo and Juliet", "Hamlet" and "Nancy Drew" as interpreted by today's creative graphic artists.
Your help is desperately needed to expand upon a growing trend in young adult reading. Graphic novels are approachable and inviting to teens, especially to those who feel books are dull, and classics uninteresting.
Won't you kindly help ignite a love of reading in these terribly terrific teens- teens in need of thought-provoking text and gratifying graphics? Your help will be absolutely appreciated.
