Please help K-1 Pelicans to Pursue Performing to Pass!!! My school, affected by Hurricane Katrina, is 60 % low income. I began teaching Kindergarten- Connection three years ago. KC consists of students that could not pass 1st year Kinder, but have high potential needing another year of extra Language Arts and Math. My school is a Blue Ribbon School and we cater to all of the needs of all of the students in any way possible. This extra year needs to be presented in a different manner so that we give accommodations to each child in KC!

These low-income students need to boost their self-esteem and be presented with an alternative curriculum than what they got the year before. Conducting Author Studies is one part of the Reading and Writing Curriculum for KC. Teaching character development, setting, story elements and authors craft tremendously help a child to comprehend and relate. Author studies are proven to guide a child in creating their own writing. For example, students see a common theme of the use of pebbles and mice using Leo Lionni as our featured author. This leads them to pick a common theme for their own writing and go to town writing about it. Ezra Jack Keats develops a community of characters that rely on each other and have everyday things happen to them. The KC child can relate to this and start looking for it in other books and incorporate this in their writing!

I am begging for help to conduct author studies for my KC Classroom. They need the books to read and explore and reread and look at! It is an alternative method that will surely work using authentic literature. They need the books to use as Mentor texts to aid their own writing. I want them to pass and this is one way to do it!

These low income, extremely bright students, who need that extra year of teaching needs these books by authors such as Leo Lionni, Ezra Jack Keats, Meme Fox, Lillian Hoban, Eric Carle, Rosemary Wells, etc... to expand their reading, comprehension and writing! We cannot offer them the same curriculum that didn't work. We need to let them use authentic literature and great stories by great authors to learn!
