Trade book reading! I teach 3rd grade reading and language arts. I am trying to find a more interesting and fun way to teach our reading standards to my students. The students I teach come from homes where reading is not important. Most of the parents can't read themselves. I would really like to change this cycle.

I experimented with a couple of trade books last year and the students were very excited. They took an interest in wanting to read everyday to find out what was going to happen in the next chapter. After reading the book, we did different writing activities. They took experiences that happened in the book and related them to their own experiences. I was amazed at how well the students responded.

When I used the trade books last year, I had to borrow from other schools to have enough for my classroom. I would like to have the availability to choose from a selection of titles and have enough copies for each of my students. Students do much better when they have their own copy of a book to read and they can take it home to read to their parents.

Your help will ensure my students have the same opportunities that students in larger schools have. You will make it possible for them to see that reading can take them many places. Hopefully, they will enjoy reading the books so much, they won't realize they are actually learning.
