I teach a number of health education classes, as well as coordinate a Teen Pregnancy and Parenting group. The girls in the program range from 14 to 20 - for many this is their first child. The community and high school we are in is often financially strapped, and unable to provide us with extras that may be needed for our program. The girls often seek out myself and the quiet of my office as a 'safe space' in a sometimes very critical school.
The students I reach out to need a comfortable, safe place where they can relax and rejuvenate themselves during the long school day. Many of the young girls feel uncomfortable using a breast pump at school because they have to go to the nurse's office, which can be stigmatizing. The girls would like to be able to pump in our program's office using a comfortable chair. They have also asked to have yoga mats so they can stretch out during their lunch breaks or when they feel uncomfortable.
We've asked for a gliding rocker and mini refrigerator, so the girls can continually breastfeed their infants without feeling ostracized for their actions. Using the chair will allow them to relax before and after having their child - in an environment that doesn't provide for their extra needs. Additionally, the use of the mats will ensure that we can help the girls stretch and relax when sitting in desk chairs has become uncomfortable.
Providing these items will make it possible for my students to be active parents and successful students. My students will be forever grateful for these items as they begin their journeys into motherhood and onward toward their diplomas.
