I teach a resource class of enthusiastic, motivated students with learning disabilities in a school with 67% of its entire population receiving free and reduced lunch.

Last year over the holiday season our class initiated a program that we called the "Rocking Reindeer" and was designed to reward students and teachers who exemplified our "fishing philosophy". Fishing is a behavior philosophy that we adopted to encourage positive behaviors in the school and throughout our lives. The four tenets of this philosophy are to have fun learning, make another person’s day, choose our attitudes, and be there for others. Members of my class volunteered their time during their recess to serenade the honored person and read them a poem. They also provided a small token of chocolate kisses to each honoree. My students were so excited to perform such a valuable service to our school AND they learned to practice reading by memorizing and reading poems we recited for the honorees. We would like to continue this idea during the 2008-2009 school year, but we would make it a year-round program and rename our group the "Fabulous Fishermen". How does my request for a color printer and ink tie into this fascinating story of one of the ways we are teaching students social skills and social responsibility? Well, read on and you will see!

Last year, I printed books for each participant as a reward for their "good deeds". The generous donation of a color printer and ink would allow us to continue this practice. It would also enable us to establish a "wall of fame" in which a color picture is posted of each recipient posing with the "Fabulous Fishermen". The color printer would enable me to continue to provide pictures to my students such as the one posted on this site. Each student received a gift of a picture frame containing their own picture to remind them to continue to "fish" over the summer. The printer would have numerous positive academic uses for learning disabled students. I could print color coded materials to help students see phonetic letter patterns. Students could use the printer to print individually created materials. I spend a great deal of time and energy encouraging my students to be enthusiastic about school and learning, since students with learning difficulties are often socially and academically isolated and frustrated.

These resources will allow me to provide students with exciting and professional-looking learning materials and help my special education students to have a valuable and positive influence at our school.
